How to Connect Google Search Console + Analytics with Rank Math (WordPress Walkthrough)
Updated July 27, 2026.
FocusOnV2EX publishes independent AI and SaaS reviews for creators and small teams. This guide is a real setup log from connecting Google Search Console (GSC) and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) on a WordPress site using Rank Math Free—including the mistakes that look broken but are normal.
What this article is not: a Rank Math affiliate pitch. We use Rank Math as the SEO plugin already installed on the site. Screenshots are from our own admin / Google accounts (UI language may be Chinese or English depending on your Google locale).
TL;DR
- Run Rank Math’s wizard on Advanced → skip import → set site type (not Webshop if you are a content site) → connect Google with all OAuth scopes.
- Verify GSC (URL-prefix). Prefer matching WordPress’s canonical host (
wwwvs apex). Add both if traffic splits. - Submit
sitemap_index.xmlon each GSC property. “Couldn’t fetch” for a few hours is common if the file returns HTTP 200 in a browser. - If Rank Math’s Site dropdown is empty, Disconnect → revoke Rank Math in Google Account permissions → Connect again—Reconnect alone often fails.
- If GA4 shows “no data,” confirm the Measurement ID is actually in the HTML. We inject GA4 via a Code Snippet and keep Rank Math Install analytics code OFF to avoid double counting.
What are GSC and GA4 (and why people confuse them)?
| System | Job |
|---|---|
| Google Search Console (GSC) | Indexing, sitemaps, search queries/clicks |
| Google Analytics 4 (GA4) | On-site traffic, realtime users, events |
| Rank Math Analytics panel | Pulls GSC/GA data into WordPress (needs Site + Property selected) |
GSC can be verified and useful even while Rank Math’s Site dropdown still says “No results found.” Those are separate layers.
How do you start the Rank Math setup wizard?
Choose Advanced (not Easy). You need Analytics + Sitemap controls. Custom Mode is Pro—skip it.

Should you import settings from another SEO plugin?
If you are standardizing on Rank Math, click Skip, Don’t Import Now. Importing schemas from a leftover plugin (e.g. AIO Schema) can stack duplicate structured data.

Caption: Import SEO Settings — skip unless you intentionally migrate.
How should you fill the “Your Site” step?
For an English review / affiliate content site:
| Field | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Site type | Other Business Website (or Blog)—not Webshop unless you truly sell products as the main identity |
| Business type | Organization |
| Website name | Your brand |
| Logo | Squared logo (≥112×112) |
| Default social image | Optional for later (1200×630) |

Caption: Your Site step. Avoid Webshop schema if the site is primarily content.
How do you connect Google services in Rank Math?
On the Analytics step, click Connect Your Rank Math Account (do not Skip if you want GSC/GA inside Rank Math).

Caption: Connect Google™ Services screen.
Sign in with Google (same account you will use for GSC/GA4).

Caption: Login to Rank Math — use Google, not Facebook/WordPress.com, for the same Google property later.
Activate the Free plan for your domain.

Caption: Plugin Activation — OK, Activate Now (Free is enough for GSC/GA wiring).
Which Google permissions should you allow?
Select all requested scopes (Analytics edit/view + Search Console manage). Missing Search Console scopes is a common reason the Site list stays empty.

Caption: Google account permission screen — keep Select all checked, then Continue.
Why is Rank Math’s Search Console “Site” dropdown empty at first?
Right after connect, GA Account may populate while Site still shows No results found. That usually means: no verified GSC URL-prefix property yet for that Google account—or the OAuth token has not refreshed the site list.

Caption: Search Console Site empty while GA Account already lists an account.
You can still finish GA wiring: pick Property + Data Stream, turn Install analytics code on only if nothing else injects gtag (see later), and enable Exclude Logged-in users so your own admin sessions do not inflate traffic.

Caption: Analytics section — Property/Stream selected; Exclude Logged-in users recommended.
What sitemap settings should you keep?
Leave Sitemaps ON, include images, and keep Posts / Pages / Categories. Skip Brands / Product categories if you are not running a real catalog.

Caption: Sitemap module — enable Sitemaps + Include Images.
Which SEO tweaks are safe defaults?
| Option | Default we used |
|---|---|
| Noindex empty category/tag archives | ON |
| Nofollow all external links | OFF (blanket nofollow hurts citation links) |
| Open external links in new tab | ON |

Caption: SEO Tweaks — keep Nofollow External Links off for content sites that cite official docs.
Finish with Return to dashboard (you do not need Pro upsells on the Ready screen).

Caption: Wizard Ready screen — leave auto-update on; return to dashboard.
How do you verify the site in Google Search Console?
Open Google Search Console → add a URL-prefix property for your canonical URL.
If Google copies a verification tag to the clipboard, that is not finished until the tag is on the site (or another method succeeds).

Caption: “Added to clipboard” means copy succeeded—still paste/verify unless another method completes automatically.
In our case, GSC auto-verified via Google Analytics once the GA property matched the site. Keep gtag installed or you can lose that verification method.

Caption: Ownership verification completed automatically (method: Google Analytics). Skip optional Instagram/TikTok prompts.
Where do you submit the sitemap?
GSC → Sitemaps → submit:
sitemap_index.xml
(Rank Math’s default index filename uses an underscore.)

Caption: Indexing → Sitemaps — enter sitemap_index.xml and Submit.
Success toast only means Google accepted the submission, not that it already crawled every URL.

Caption: Success dialog after submit.
Why does the sitemap status say “Couldn’t fetch”?
Minutes later you may see Couldn’t fetch / 无法获取 with 0 discovered pages. If https://yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml returns 200 and valid XML in a browser, wait—Google often retries within hours to a day. Do not spam resubmits.

Caption: Submitted sitemap_index.xml still “Couldn’t fetch” shortly after submit—often temporary.
What if Rank Math Site is still empty after GSC verification?
GSC verification ≠ Rank Math site list sync. You may still see No results found.

Caption: Rank Math General Settings → Analytics — Site dropdown still empty.
Fix that usually works
- Rank Math → Analytics → Disconnect (not only Reconnect).
- Google Account → Third-party access → remove Rank Math SEO.
- Connect again → grant all scopes.
- Prefer a GSC URL-prefix that matches WordPress Site Address (
wwwvs apex).
Why does GA4 say it has not received data?
GA4 Home may show no data and display your Measurement ID (example pattern G-XXXXXXXX).

Caption: GA4 reporting no hits—confirm the Measurement ID exists in public HTML (incognito).
Checklist:
- View page source on the live homepage → search for
G-…. - Test in an incognito window if you exclude logged-in users.
- If Rank Math’s Install code never outputs gtag, inject GA4 with a front-end Code Snippet (or another single injector)—not two injectors.
Should you verify both www and non-www?
If WordPress lives on https://example.com but you first verified https://www.example.com, add the apex URL-prefix too (and submit the sitemap there as well).

Caption: Apex property ownership verified (Analytics method).
Two properties in the GSC switcher is normal—not a bug.

Caption: Property picker showing both www and non-www URL-prefix properties.
Submit sitemap_index.xml on the apex property as well; early “Couldn’t fetch” can repeat.

Caption: Apex property Sitemaps table — status may stay pending briefly.
How do you finally pick the Site in Rank Math?
After a full Disconnect/reconnect (or once Google returns the site list), the dropdown shows both hosts. Pick the one matching WordPress Site Address—in our case the apex URL.

Caption: Empty again mid-troubleshooting—trigger Disconnect + revoke + reconnect.

Caption: Site dropdown finally lists www and apex — choose the canonical host.
What does a correct final Analytics screen look like?
Target state:
- Site = canonical host
- Index Status = ON (optional)
- GA Account / Property / Data Stream filled
- Install analytics code = OFF if another snippet already injects gtag
- AdSense left empty until you intentionally monetize ads

Caption: Working configuration — GSC Site selected; Install analytics code off.
Local Rank Math DB may show 0 cached days right after connect—click Update data manually and wait for GSC/GA pipelines (often ~1 day).

Caption: Analytics Database at 0 rows immediately after connect—expected until fetch completes.
Why leave “Install analytics code” off?
If Code Snippets (or another plugin) already prints gtag for your Measurement ID, enabling Rank Math Install analytics code double-fires pageviews.

Caption: Keep Install analytics code off when another injector owns gtag.
How should you validate everything in 10 minutes?
- Incognito homepage → View source → find
G-…→ check GA4 Realtime. - GSC → both properties verified →
sitemap_index.xmlsubmitted. - Rank Math → Site selected → Save Changes → Update data manually.
- Optionally hit
wp-cron.phpon a schedule so WordPress scheduled posts and background jobs stay reliable.
FAQ
Is an empty Rank Math Site dropdown a failed GSC setup?
No. GSC verification and sitemap submission work in Google’s UI without Rank Math’s dropdown. The dropdown is only for Rank Math’s in-dashboard reports / Index Status.
Should I delete the www property if I use apex?
Keep both if either receives traffic or redirects inconsistently. Later, canonicalize with redirects so one host is primary.
Is “Couldn’t fetch” on sitemap fatal?
Not if the XML URL returns 200. Wait and re-open the sitemap row the next day.
Do I need Rank Math Pro for GSC + GA4?
No for connecting Search Console + installing/reading GA4 wiring. Pro adds extras (e.g. some email report frequencies, AdSense module).
Can FocusOnV2EX guarantee Google will index every URL in 24 hours?
No. New sites often need days for coverage. This guide only covers correct wiring.
Bottom line
Connect Google in this order: Rank Math Advanced wizard → full OAuth scopes → verify GSC URL-prefix (match WordPress host) → submit sitemap_index.xml → fix empty Site with Disconnect + revoke + reconnect → ensure exactly one GA4 injector. Empty dropdowns and temporary sitemap fetch errors are usually process issues, not proof that Google “rejected” your site.
